Apparently, in America, Peeps mean Easter. Maybe because they look like chicks?

When I say “they look like chicks”, I say this mainly from my prior knowledge of the product and the front of the packet. They do not look like chicks at all – they look like dollops of marshmallow made by a machine with five nozzles on a production line.

“Chicks”, apparently

Anyhow, I’ve always been intrigued by Peeps, and never had them before. They had this mystical magical quality in my head that they were something different, something special. Turns out they’re just sugar coated marshmallow splodges with very good branding.

Now this is I believe the first item I’ve reviewed that does not have “Birthday” in its name. We have confetti cake coming up soon too. Needless to say, the imagery of both is clearly that of Birthday Cake, so we shall assume that’s what they mean and that birthdays are out of fashion or politicially incorrect for some reason, and will provide judgement on the same lines.

These don’t take like any sort of cake. I think there is actually a birthday cake flavour hiding in there, but it’s immediately overpowered by the marshmallow taste. I think possibly the sugar coating is where the flavour lies.

Are the brown dots meant to be eyes?

They’re very pretty and very moreish – the sprinkles are well defined little crystals that taste of nothing, the base colour is a pale yellow, but richer than the pictures suggest and they are just a sugar rush, but a very pleasant one.

Overall, I’d happily have these for easter instead of eggs, but could do better on the birthday cake.
